What is Dyno Tuning?
Dyno Tuning is a meticulous approach to tuning up a vehicle that encompasses a variety of tests, totaling, on average, six to seven hours. The process of Dyno Tuning starts with an assessment of a vehicle’s engine and ends with a test that reveals if there remain any necessary final changes. “It’s really an in-depth look at a vehicle. Today’s computer technology gives us diagnostic insight we never had before. It is a lengthy process, but the savings from gas efficiency and horsepower maximization are definitely worth it,” explains RDP Motorsports.
The “dyno,” short for dynamometer, measures force, torque, or power. Varying loads are placed on vehicles to monitor performance, so mechanics can measure engine development activities. While dynamometers are as diverse as their testing, vehicles are typically placed on a chassis dynamometer.
A vehicle is driven onto a set of rollers, RDP Motorsports elaborates, and the chassis dynamometer measures the power exerted onto the rollers by the vehicle’s wheels. Most modern chassis dynamometers have rollers that also test traction, as well as adjust the air-fuel ratio. In fact, coupled with diagnostic on-board links, these dynamometers become a complete testing system. These dynamometer test systems generate results regarding emissions sampling, engine speed, load control, and safety monitoring during different conditions.

“Any mechanic worth his mettle will first question the customer about the vehicle,” RDP Motorsports states. The mechanic, following the interview with a customer, will check engine compression to decide whether or not the engine is mechanically sound. Simultaneously, the mechanic will conduct a visual inspection, looking for broken lines, oil marks, burned or weakened plug wires, and dirt. Anything that needs cleaned, installed, replaced or removed happens at this juncture. These processes ensure that all necessary changes are made prior to Dyno Tuning, so they “essentially work as safeguards,” states RDP.
An important determination lies in the proper heat range of the spark plug that a particular vehicle needs. This heat range varies dependent upon the size and workload of the vehicle. A large truck or SUV, for example, a customer uses to haul a trailer would require a colder spark plug than a four-door sedan driven for commuting. Various factors contribute to best practices of a proper tune-up, and the installation of an inappropriate spark plug will most likely cause issues with a vehicle’s operation.
When the engine has been reviewed and all worn parts have been replaced, the mechanic may move to the next step. He or she will remove the distributor, which is responsible for passing voltage from the ignition coils to an engine’s cylinders that power the engine through igniting the fuel-air amalgamation. The distributor is placed in a machine, called a synchrograph, which tests whether or not the centrifugal advance rate needs modification. If it does, the purpose of doing so would be to improve engine responsiveness and gas mileage. “Customers may take comfort in knowing that the distributor is tested under operating conditions, so there is not a single doubt that it will function appropriately when installed into their vehicle,” RDP Motorsports emphasizes.
During this final step, the mechanic places the vehicle’s driving wheels on the dynamometer’s rollers. With the vehicle in gear, under various conditions involving speed and load, the engine is tested. RDP Motorsports staff states that this is when engine performance is monitored by looking at the horse power transmitted to the wheel compared to the amount of engine vacuum. Now any final modifications are made contingent upon the results returned from the tests. Everything is reviewed and explained to the customer for quality assurance and satisfaction.
